The Menomonee Valley Passage
Historically, hundreds of workers from the Southside
were employed in the Menomonee Valley due to its
close proximity and "walk to work" possibility. They
would start the trek to work by walking down a
staircase that was located at 37th and Pierce Streets,
walking through a tunnel that ran beneath the railroad
tracks, and then crossing a foot bridge over the
Menomonee River. Decades ago, when the Milwaukee
Road Shops closed, the bridge was torn down and the
tunnel was sealed, leaving Silver City neighbors
without an easy way to access the amazing
Menomonee Valley amenities in their backyard.
The Valley has been in redevelopment over the last 10
years and has brought in 19 new companies, 4,200
new jobs, and 45 acres of greenspace along the Hank
Aaron State Trail. The re-opening of the Valley
Passage is a new part of the Valley's revitalization.
The Valley Passage, to be constructed in summer/fall
2010, will reconnect the Menomonee Valley and the
Silver City neighborhood. The project includes a
bike/pedestrian bridge over the Menomonee River, a
railroad underpass, and a universally-accessible path
leading up to 37th and Pierce Streets. Upon
completion, the Valley Passage will reestablish the
historical connection between the Silver City
neighborhood and the Menomonee Valley.
The Valley Passage will be a part of the Hank Aaron
State Trail, and will be the link that connects the
current trail, which runs from Miller Park to Lakeshore
State Park, to the western extension, which will run
from the Valley Passage bridge through the VA
grounds and State Fair Park in fall 2010, and
eventually to Underwood Creek Parkway at the
Milwaukee / Waukesha County line.
When constructed, the Valley Passage will include
several concrete retaining walls that will be covered
with murals that depict the history of the area.
The Urban Ecology Center also has plans to open a

branch at the entrance of the Valley Passage in fall 2012. This will add to the immense recreational
opportunities for neighbors in the Layton Boulevard West Neighborhood!
Valley Passage Murals
The Valley Passage (S. 37th St. and W. Pierce St.), the bridge that will reconnect the Silver City neighborhood and the Menomonee Valley later this year, will include murals facing Pierce Street, as well as Canal Street. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WISDOT) has included the murals to create an inviting entrance into the Valley Passage that also deters graffiti. Five muralists were selected to provide renderings and below is the rendering from the selected mural artist.
