Through the leadership of Supervisor Diliberti and Alderman
Murphy, LBWN’s Economic Development Initiative received funding in part
through a City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County grant of federal community
development funds. The Initiative was created in January 2001 out of the need to
increase the economic stability and vitality of the neighborhood. In 2001 the
initiative accomplished the following goals:
 | Conducted a neighborhood consumer survey. |
 | Completed a neighborhood market analysis. |
 | Began the creation of a five-year economic development strategic plan. |
 | Developed a database containing current information of businesses and
vacant commercial properties. |
 | Created a neighborhood business directory for local resident use and for
promotion of commercial districts businesses. |
 | Recruited 2 new businesses into the neighborhood. |
 | Provided technical assistance to existing and potential businesses. |
 | Created architectural landscaping and street-scaping designs for National
Avenue |
 | Collaborated efforts with other Economic Development Coordinators and
community development associations. |
Goal:
Effective commercial district revitalization by:
 | Working to recruit compatible businesses into commercial building
vacancies |
 | Providing technical assistance to existing business owners |
 | Enhancing the appearance of the commercial districts and the building
facades |
