    Through the leadership of Supervisor Diliberti and Alderman Murphy, LBWN’s Economic Development Initiative received funding in part through a City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County grant of federal community development funds. The Initiative was created in January 2001 out of the need to increase the economic stability and vitality of the neighborhood. In 2001 the initiative accomplished the following goals:

bulletConducted a neighborhood consumer survey.
bulletCompleted a neighborhood market analysis.
bulletBegan the creation of a five-year economic development strategic plan.
bulletDeveloped a database containing current information of businesses and vacant commercial properties.
bulletCreated a neighborhood business directory for local resident use and for promotion of commercial districts businesses.
bulletRecruited 2 new businesses into the neighborhood.
bulletProvided technical assistance to existing and potential businesses.
bulletCreated architectural landscaping and street-scaping designs for National Avenue
bulletCollaborated efforts with other Economic Development Coordinators and community development associations.

Effective commercial district revitalization by:

bulletWorking to recruit compatible businesses into commercial building vacancies
bulletProviding technical assistance to existing business owners
bulletEnhancing the appearance of the commercial districts and the building facades
bulletMarketing the commercial districts
bulletDecreasing crime and the perception of crime

bulletCreating an identity for the commercial districts
bulletEmpowering business owners to take stake in their commercial district
